digital accessibility & ethics | rhetoric of science & the environment | technical communication
I am an Associate Professor of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies (WRD), Director of Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ENS), and Affiliate Faculty in Appalachian Studies at the University of Kentucky.
I teach courses on environmental rhetoric, technical communication, and communication in the natural and social sciences. My research often focuses on overlaps between these areas; I study questions such as how web interfaces promote productive conversations about climate change, how smartphones’ ubiquity change our everyday behaviors, and how signage design in public spaces can increase environmental knowledge.
I frequently work with local and regional environmental and technical practitioners, including the Kentucky Division for Air Quality, the Kentucky Geological Survey, the University of Kentucky Recycling Program, and The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky.
My work has been published in Technical Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Rhetoric Review, and Computers & Composition.
